        Main Review
The UK seems to finally be catching up with the rest of Europe in the female fronted metal stakes and the latest addition to the fold is Crimson Tears. ‘Gothica’ is their debut 4 track EP – symphonic metal with a hint of Nightwish (one of the bands that inspired them) but with enough of their own style to make them sound fresh. Vocalist Gina has a great voice, quite deep and pleasant and well suited to the music.

Opening with a catchy piano intro, first song ‘Eternity’ is a great up-tempo track, followed by ‘My Plea’ another fast paced number with Gina’s vocals soaring above the meaty guitars. Title track ‘Gothica’ slows things down to a moodier sound, before album closer ‘Gardens of Sorrow’ picks the pace up again. Complex guitar lines and atmospheric keyboards combine with Gina’s strong vocals to make a varied listening experience. There are hints of other bands in their sound, but they have enough of their own uniqueness that all they need is a bit of time to establish more firmly their own style.

What is also particularly noticeable on this EP is the great production – the sound is crisp and clear and the guitars are strong in the mix. This immediately puts it head and shoulders above many other demos, so often let down by shoddy sound and the inexplicable desire to ignore the guitars entirely. Thankfully Karl Groom of “Threshold” fame has done a sterling job.

Already playing new songs live and with plans to record their first full-length album for release towards the end of next year, we will certainly be hearing more of Crimson Tears. A very promising start that will hopefully lead to great things – definitely a band to watch.

    Standout Tracks:  Eternity, My Plea.

    Overall Score:   7.5 /10
